JAVA Tutorial
The UP ACM-JUG Java Tutorial was given by Mr. Aldwin Lee (Manager of UP JRDC) last Saturday, January 20, 2007, at the UP Java Research & Development Center (UP JRDC) at the UP-Ayala Technopark.
The tutorial covered basic Java which included background of the Java programming language and a hands-on practice on classes, data types, overloaded constructors, parameter passing, methods and command line arguments.
Participants of the tutorial were students from the College of Business Administration, College of Engineering, College of Education and the Institute of Library and Information Science which included UP ACM-JUG members and non-members.
World Usability Day 2006
The World Usability Day seminar was held last November 14, Tuesday at the Network Lab of UP IT Training Center (UP ITTC). The discussion was an introduction to usability. This was delivered by Alvin Tan of the Adobe User Group (AUG). The participants of the seminar were from UP ACM, UP Circuit, UP ITTC, and some developers/designers within UP campus. At the end of the seminar, there was a raffle of caps, posters, shirts, and an O’Reilly book.
Apple Roadshow: Macintosh in Education
The Macintosh in Education seminar was delivered by Sarah Lumang (Product Manager of Apple) at the Beta Epsilon Multimedia Hall of the UP College of Engineering. The topics discussed were ‘Why Apple in Education‘, an introduction to some tools such as GarageBand, Office 2004, Spotlight, Dashboard, etc., and some demos for each of the applications. Participants of the seminar prepared by Portia Paras of Ynzal Marketing and the UP ACM Student Chapter were mostly composed of Engineering faculty and students. A raffle of iPod accessories was given at the end of the seminar.
Software Freedom Day 2006
“Desktops on Desktops” features a parallelistic view of an operating system (OS) showdown. Demonstrating the hardware utilization properties of today’s widely-used operating systems, such as GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows, this event hopes to show the major differences of each architecture, and how one desktop could run on top of another desktop. This event is open to everyone, student and professionals alike, who are interested in “benchmarking” operating systems.
ABC - Alternative Block Class
In partnership with Campo Uno, the UP ACM held the alternative
block class for the LIS (Library and Information Science)
and CS (Computer Science) freshmen blocks at the Quezon City
Circle. The activities included orientation, rapelling and free
snacks that served as the blocks' first team building activities.
There were approximately 60 freshmen wo joined the event.
Freshman Orientation Program Committee 2006
The UP ACM joined the 2006 Freshman Orientation Program Committee
(FOPC) for the first time ranking 54th out of 71 organizations.
The members collected used PET bottles, aluminum cans, white papers, and
assorted paper to raise funds for the Freshman Orientation Program.
The UP ACM was under the FOPC Marketing Committee. The organization
also handled two Freshman blocks, F1 and G13 from the Institute of
Library and Information Science and from the Department of Computer
Science respectively.

UP ACM HelpDesk
Last registration period, May 9-13 2006, the UP ACM extended a
helping hand to the incoming freshmen students by putting up a
help desk in front of MH 219. The members help the freshmen by
assisting them through the registration period. There are
approximately 20 members helping the 150+ incoming freshmen.
